Really surprised at some of the comments on here about how quiet this pressing is. The album reminds me at times of a Leonard Cohen album. Quiet Light, Hey Rosey and Not in Kansas are also good National songs. And since when were the first two Strokes albums incredible? All 3 LP's sound phenomenal and play with extremely minimal (if any) surface noise. The lyrics (credited to Berninger, his wife Carin Besser, and Mike Mills, the film director who’s also listed as a co-producer) are both allusive and grounded – in The Pull of You the dichotomy in this desperate pinballing between engagement and distance is pinpointed in a single couplet: “I’m either at the bottom of a well / Or spinning into somebody’s outdoor glass furniture.” It’s an album you can come away from unable to hum a single bar, but so captivating you want to return to it immediately. Do the National do a lot with a little, or a little with a lot? For that is what he appears to be implying in the lyric, when they were in fact just hoary old rock 'n' roll rubbish. The singing is great and the female voice is a nice compliment to the male voice. The yellow disc has a lot of non-fill scraping, which is irritating during some of the choral segments (and is a manufacturing flaw so it shouldn't be there anyway) and distortion on the grey disc as well.
